Saxony 1790-IEC 2/3 thaler KM-1022
This specimen was lot 74597 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $125. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 2/3 Taler, 1790 IEC. Dresden Mint. Friedrich August III. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details. Vicariat Issue. An wonderful example of this one year type. Presenting with steel gray surfaces and much originally remaining despite the noted cleaning." The elector of Saxony was traditionally vicar of the empire, i.e., administrator during an interregnum, in this case between the death of Joseph II and the coronation of Leopold II. The elector also issued a 1/12 thaler, ⅓ thaler and single thaler for the occasion. Altho marked "⅔", it was worth only half a thaler.
