Saxony 1792-IEC 2/3 thaler KM-1033
This specimen was lot 31501 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxony. Friedrich August III Vicariat 2/3 Taler (Gulden) 1792-IEC MS67 NGC, Dresden mint. Well struck, with frosty mint luster beneath light golden patina, with a slight deeper golden area on the reverse. Splendid eye-appeal, with no imperfections worthy of mention. This one-year type, struck for the Vicariat, is very rare in such superior quality. The finest certified example, with the closest other being an MS64. From the Feeling Good Collection." The elector of Saxony was traditionally vicar of the empire, i.e., administrator during an interregnum, in this case between the death of Leopold II and the coronation of Francis II. Altho struck 1792 only, it is more available than the regular issue (KM 1025), probably because it was saved. Altho marked "⅔", it was worth only half a thaler.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver.
Catalog reference: KM 1033, Kahnt-1160, Buck-184.
