This specimen was lot 689 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $411.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1790-1EC. PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. Friedrich August III (1763-1806)." On the death of emperor Joseph II, the elector became vicar of the empire until such time as a new emperor could be elected. This thaler was issued to commemorate the occasion. Another vicariat thaler would be needed in 1792 (Dav-2700).
