Saxony 1790-IEC 1/3 thaler KM-1021
This specimen was lot 23560 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 1/3 Taler, 1790-IEC. Friedrich August III. NGC MS-62. A pleasing one-year type, this attractively toned minor features a subtle cobalt blue hue as well as some burnished golden hints and a good deal of lustrous brilliance remaining." On the death of emperor Joseph II, the elector became vicar of the empire until such time as a new emperor could be elected. This one-third thaler was issued to commemorate the occasion. The regular issue one-third thaler (KM 1010) was also struck in 1790 but with a different reverse. Another vicariat one-third thaler would be needed in 1792 (KM 1032).
