Künker sale 263, lot 1219
Jean Elsen sale 148, lot 928

The first specimen was lot 1219 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,425 (about US$3,133 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM Friedrich August II. 1733-1763. Reichstaler 1746, Dresden. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Electorate of Saxony, Frederick August II, 1733-63, thaler of 1746, Dresden mint. Toned very fine to extremely fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 928 in Jean Elsen sale 148 (Brussels, September 2021), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,559 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

" ALLEMAGNE, SAXE, Friedrich August II (1733-1763), AR Taler, 1746FWôF, Dresde. D/ B. l., dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Les écus de Pologne et de Saxe sous une couronne. Eclat du flan sur la tranche. Très Beau à Superbe. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Frederick Augustus II, 1733-63, silver thaler of 1746, Dreden mint. Obverse: laureate, draped and armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms of Poland and Saxony. Edge defect. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

The exhaustion of the fighting in Poland rendered the Saxon state prostrate, and most of the thalers of this period are rare. Prosperity (and high mintages) would not return until the reign of Friedrich August III (1763-1806). This type was issued every year 1734-56 but it is not common.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: silver, the second specimen 29,20 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-2665; Schnee 1028, KM 880.
