Sincona sale 9, lot 4820

This specimen was lot 4820 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 1500 CHF (about US$1,897 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"POLEN August III. 1733-1763. Taler 1741, Dresden. Sehr selten. Schöne Tönung. Fast vorzüglich. (Poland, Augustus III, 1733-63, thaler of 1741, Dresden mint. Very rare, handsome toning, choice extremely fine.)"

This rare type is listed in the SCWC for 1745 only. Most Saxon thalers of the period 1660-1760 are scarce. The elector's attempt to conquer and rule Poland as well as Saxony impoverished both countries.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29,15 g.

Catalog reference: Gum. 2283, Dav-2670, KM 914.
