Saxony 1742 ducat Fr-2865
This specimen was lot 25197 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Ducat, 1742/1. Dresden Mint. Friedrich August II (August III of Poland). ICG AU-58. Vicariat issue; overdate variety. Featuring a clear overdate and the Elector atop a rearing horse, this near-Mint example retains a great deal of luster and yields a pleasing golden-orange color, all while the actual handling is quite minimal. From the Augustana Collection." This type was struck 1741-42 to celebrate the elector's assumption of the vicariat, temporary ruler of the Holy Roman Empire until Charles VI's successor could be elected. The dispute over the imperial election degenerated into the War of the Austrian Succession and ended only in 1745, on the death of the Bavarian candidate and the coronation of Francis I, husband of Maria Theresia of Austria.
