Saxony 1744-FWoF thaler Dav-2665
This specimen was lot 1232 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,965 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Friedrich August II. 1733-1763. Reichstaler 1744, Dresden. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 62. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Herrliche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Frederick Augustus II, 1733-63, thaler of 1744, Dresden mint. In NGC MS-62 holder. Scarce in this quality, beautiful patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The exhaustion of the fighting in Poland rendered the Saxon state prostrate, and most of the thalers of this period are rare. Prosperity (and high mintages) would not return until the reign of Friedrich August III (1763-1806). This type was issued every year 1734-56 but it is not common.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: 28.80 g, silver.
