Saxony 1670-CR thaler Dav-7625
This specimen was lot 31131 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxony. Johann Georg II Taler 1670-CR MS64 PCGS, Dresden mint. A charming two-year "Wechseltaler" type that is rarely seen in appreciable conditions, the majority of those having come to market in the last twenty years decidedly circulated. Here on offer is a clear departure from these other representatives, blessed with an exacting strike rendering each detail of Johann Georg II full and wholly engulfed in polychromatic tones to please the eye. A beautiful production to facilitate exchange between Leipzig, Hamburg, and the Netherlands. Only two are currently certified in the censuses, the present example and a VF25, thus confirming the importance this opportunity presents. From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." This type of 1670-71 is slightly scarcer than the Dav-7621, struck the same years, which shows the elector in a curly haired wig.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
