Künker sale 293, lot 1203

This specimen was lot 1203 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €400 (about US$539 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Johann Georg II. 1656-1680. Gulden (60 Kreuzer) 1669, Leipzig, für die Markgrafschaft Meißen. R Feine Patina, sehr schön. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, John George II, 1656-80, gulden of 1669, Leipzig mint, for Meissen. Scarce, fine patina, very fine.)"

The gulden or two-thirds thaler suddenly attained great popularity in northern Germany in the 1670's and were emitted in large quantities from many localities. The elector of Saxony issued this scarce type of 1669-70 as a sixty kreuzer.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.
