This specimen was lot 721 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Albertine Line. Klippe Taler, 1662. Johann Georg II (1656-80). NGC MS-64. Struck to commemorate the marriage of Johan Georg II's daughter Erdmuthe Sophie to Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, Christian Ernst. A beautiful and detailed piece full of heraldic and religious iconography. Well struck with full detail, legends and inscription. Lightly toned with subdued luster beneath. Very attractive. From the Rockaway Collection." Klippe thalers, originally made during sieges when regular minting equipment was unavailable, became fashionable during the seventeenth century for the striking of commemoratives such as weddings, baptisms and deaths.
