Künker sale 386, lot 5404

This specimen was lot 5404 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$4,910 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Johann Georg II. 1656-1680. Reichstaler 1664, Dresden. Gesamttaler. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, vorzüglich. (electorate of Saxony, John George II, 1656-80, thaler of 1664, Dresden mint. Scarce in this quality, very attractive example with superb patina, extremely fine.)"

This type is listed for 1658-68 and is fairly common. It was issued concurrently with Dav-7617, which shows the electoral cap on the table instead of the plumed helmet shown here. Confusingly, the SCWC lists this item with a photo of Dav-7617 and cross-references KM 476 to Dav-7617.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29,12 g.

Catalog reference: KM 476, Dav-7619; Schnee 927; Clauß/Kahnt 392.
