Saxony H3076-31532r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31532 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $7,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxony. Johann Georg II 2 Taler 1663-CR AU53 NGC. An impressive large-size Double Taler produced to an exceptionally high standard and toned to a smoky steel-gray. The planchet shows some evidence of irregularity pre-striking, leaving an uneven surface in the obverse fields; however this only texturizes the empty space and splits the residual luster into appealing facets. Despite its grade, this piece is nearly as-made with slight highpoint flatness diagnostic of striking weakness as opposed to wear. Commanding incredible eye appeal, a piece worthy of in-hand inspection for a true appreciation of its quality." This type was accompanied by KM 474/Dav-LS406 (thaler), KM 506/Dav-LS402 (quadruple thaler), Dav-LS405 (1½ thaler) and KM 505/Dav-LS403 (triple thaler).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 58.24 g.

Catalog reference: KM 504, Dav-LS404.
