Sincona sale 9, lot 3842

This specimen was lot 3842 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$202 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, Albertiner. Christian II., Johann Georg und August unter Vormundschaft, 1591-1611. Taler 1611, Dresden. Sehr schön-fast sehr schön. (Germany, Electorate of Saxony, Christian II, John George and August under joint rule, 1591-1611, thaler of 1611, Dresden mint. Very fine to choice very fine.)"

Christian II succeeded to the electorate in 1591, aged eight. Dominated by his mother, he lapsed into alcoholism and died of a heart attack, aged 27. The SCWC notes this type for 1604-11.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
