Künker sale 386, lot 5390

This specimen was lot 5390 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,551 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Johann Georg I. und August, 1611-1615. 1/4 Reichstaler 1612, Dresden, auf das Vikariat. Mit breitem Hüftbild und kleiner Jahreszahl. R Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung "Cygnus in Nummis". (electorate of Saxony, John George I and August, 1611-15, quarter thaler of 1612, Dresden mint, on the vicariat, with broad bust and small date. Rare, handsome patina, extremely fine.)"

This vicariat issue accompanied a half thaler (KM 54), thaler (KM 55) and double thaler (KM 57). During the interregnum between the death of the Holy Roman Emperor and the election of his successor, the empire was ruled by two vicars, the elector of Saxony and the elector of the Palatinate. The position became ceremonial once the Hapsburgs monopolized the throne.
