Saxony 1616 1/4 thaler KM-40
This specimen was lot 5392 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €420 (about US$543 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Johann Georg I. und August, 1611-1615. 1/4 Reichstaler 1616, Dresden. Posthume Prägung. R Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung "Cygnus in Nummis". (electorate of Saxony, John George I and August, 1611-15, quarter thaler of 1616, Dresden mint, posthumous strike. Rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Saxony was one of the few states to issue an extensive series of quarter thalers. This type was struck 1611-16 along with KM 88, featuring Johann Georg alone, struck 1616-24, and KM 78, struck 1615-17. Johann Georg survived until 1656.
