This specimen was lot 34725 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $505. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1611. NGC AU-58. Johann Georg & August (1611-15). Nice strike, dark toned and very attractive." Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This type was issued 1611-16 and is common.
