Künker sale 384, part of lot 3056

This specimen was lot part of 3056 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €300 (about US$388 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Franz Anton von Harrach, 1709-1727. Einseitiger 1/2 Kreuzer 1709, 1710, 1711, 1712, 1713, 1714, 1715, 1716, 1717, 1718, 1719, 1720, 1721, 1722, 1724, 1725, 1727. Probszt 2070-2086; Zöttl 2487-2503. 17 Stück., Meist sehr schön und besser. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Francis Anthony of Harrach, 1709-27, uniface half kreuzers of 1709-27. Seventeen pieces, mostly very fine and better.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1709-27 and has a low catalog value. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
