Künker sale 384, part of lot 3050

This specimen was part of lot 3050 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €550 (about US$711 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Franz Anton von Harrach, 1709-1727. 1/4 Reichstaler 1711, 1712. 7,32 g und 7,43 g. Mit Stern (P. H. Müller) unter dem Brustbild. Probszt 2039, 2040; Zöttl 2449 (Type 2), 2450 (Type 2). 2 Stück., Sehr schön und fast vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Francis Anthony of Harrach, 1709-27, quarter thalers of 1711 and 1712. Two pieces, very fine and about extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1710-12 and 1715. Franz Anton was the first archbishop in several generations to place his portrait on the coinage. The contemporary KM 305.2 is the traditional quarter thaler with the Madonna on the obverse. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 7,43 g.

Catalog reference: KM 306, Probszt 2040; Zöttl 2450 (Type 2).
