Sincona sale 18, lot 3162

This specimen was lot 3162 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Taler 1711. Sehr schön. (Germany, archbishopric of Salzburg, thaler of 1711, very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type is known from 1709 and 1711 and is scarcer than the preceding type (Dav-1234).

Specification: 28.9 g, 0.875 fine silver, 42 mm diameter, this specimen 28.79 g.
