Salzburg 1694 thaler Dav-3510
This specimen was lot 50325 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Taler, 1694. PCGS MS-62. Johann Ernst Graf von Thun und Hohenstein (1687-1709). Very well struck with beautiful golden and azure tone over lustrous fields." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687-1709 and is common. Confusingly, it is also listed as Dav-1234.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
