Salzburg 1695 thaler Dav-3510
This specimen was lot 74515 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Taler, 1695/4. Johann Ernst von Thun und Honenstein. PCGS Genuine--Edge Repaired, Unc Details. Toned in deep, mossy greens and beautifully detailed." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687-1709 and is common. Confusingly, it is also listed as Dav-1234.
