Salzburg 1693 thaler Dav-3510
This specimen was lot 33381 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $1,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria: Salzburg. Johann Ernst Taler 1693 MS62 NGC. A most splendid offering certified just shy of choice designations and imbued with an eye-appeal to certainly make up for that fact, with prominent notes of cerulean and champagne glistening throughout razor-sharp motifs." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687-1709 and is common, altho the SCWC does not mention any overdate. Confusingly, it is also listed as Dav-1234.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
