Salzburg 1701 thaler Dav-1234
This specimen was lot 33384 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria: Salzburg. Johann Ernst Taler 1701/0 MS63 NGC. A most eye-catching example of this collectible type, scarcely encountered with this superior combination of both technical preservation and aesthetic caliber, devoid of major imperfection visible to the naked eye amidst a full array of vibrant polychrome tones." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687-1709 and is common, altho the SCWC does not mention any overdate. The issues prior to 1701 are listed as Dav-3510.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 29 g, 0.875 fine silver.
