Künker sale 354, lot 5985

This specimen was lot 5985 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €380 (about US$529 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE GEISTLICHKEIT IN DEN HABSBURGISCHEN ERBLAN, Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein, 1687-1709. Reichstaler 1698 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1697 geändert). Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. (Germany, archbishopric of Salzburg, Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein, 1687-1709, thaler of 1698, 1698/7 overdate. Handsome patina, extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687-1709 and is common. Confusingly, it is also listed as Dav-1234.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.91 g.

Catalog reference: KM 254, Dav-3510; Zöttl 2170.
