Salzburg 1699 thaler Dav-3510
This specimen was lot 33383 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria: Salzburg. Johann Ernst Taler 1699/8 MS63 NGC. An outstanding representative of the type displaying one the clearest and most well-expressed detail and blanketed in a most attractive lavender and peach patina." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687-1709 and is common, altho the SCWC does not mention any overdate. The issues after 1700 are listed as Dav-1234.
