Künker sale 293, lot 1758

This specimen was lot 1758 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €550 (about US$741 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE GEISTLICHKEIT IN DEN HABSBURGISCHEN ERBLANDEN, Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein, 1687-1709. Reichstaler 1707. Prachtexemplar mit feiner Tönung. Fast Stempelglanz. (associated church principalities of the inherited lands of Austria, John Ernest of Thun und Hohenstein, 1687-1709, thaler of 1707. Proof example with fine toning, about uncirculated.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687-1709 and is common. Confusingly, it is also listed as Dav-3510.
