Salzburg 1707 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 22055 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. 1/2 Taler, 1707/6. Archbishop Johann Ernst Graf von Thun und Hohenstein (1687-1709). NGC MS-65. Overdate not noted on the PCGS label. Sharply struck with attractive soft grey tone in the fields and beautiful multi-color tone amongst the devices showing blue, red and golden hues. A Magnificent example and sure to please its new owner." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687, 1694-1700, 1702-1708 and is fairly common.
