Künker sale 293, lot 1757

This specimen was lot 1757 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €130 (about US$175 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE GEISTLICHKEIT IN DEN HABSBURGISCHEN ERBLANDEN, Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein, 1687-1709. 1/2 Reichstaler 1705. R Feine Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (associated church principalities of the inherited lands of Austria, John Ernest of Thun und Hohenstein, 1687-1709, half thaler of 1705. Scarce, fine patina, some edge defects, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687, 1694-1700, 1702-1708 and is fairly common.
