Salzburg 1708 thaler Dav-1234
This specimen was lot 32490 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "Salzburg. Johann Ernst Taler 1708 AU55 PCGS. Fully struck, resulting in boldly rendered detail and a sharp overall appearance. The flan appears slightly bent, which is not uncommon for the type." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687-1709 and is common. Confusingly, it is also listed as Dav-3510.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
