Sincona sale 97, lot 2158

This specimen was lot 2158 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Salzburg, Erzbistum, Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein, 1687-1709. Taler 1709, Salzburg. Walzenprägung. Fast vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, John Ernest of Thun and Hohenstein, 1687-1709, thaler of 1709, Salzburg mint, rotated reverse. About Extremely Fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687-1709 and is common. Confusingly, it is also listed as Dav-3510.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: silver, this specimen 28.97 g.

Catalog reference: KM 254, Zöttl 2181. Dav-1234.
