Künker sale 354, lot 5174

This specimen was lot 5174 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €320 (about US$445 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE GEISTLICHKEIT IN DEN HABSBURGISCHEN ERBLANDEN, SALZBURG, ERZBISTUM. Franz Anton von Harrach, 1709-1727. 1/4 Dukat 1713. GOLD. Vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Francis Anton of Harrach, 1709-27, quarter ducat of 1713. Extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1709, 1712-19 and 1725.
