This specimen was lot 1595 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1897-AT. NGC PROOF-58. Proof striking with only a minuscule amount of wear and a few scattered light hairlines. Brilliant surfaces." In 1886, the ruble was reduced to 20 grams after having been fixed at 20.73 grams since 1798. This type was struck 1894-1915.
Recorded mintage: 18,515,000 plus 26,000,000 without assayer's initials.
Specification: 20 g, 0.900 fine silver, 33.65 mm diameter, edge letted "ЧИСТАГО СЕРЕБРА 4 ЗОЛОТНИКА 21 ДОЛѦ".
