Sincona sale 12, lot 878

This specimen was lot 878 in Sincona sale 12 (Zürich, October 2013), where it sold for 350 CHF (about US$453 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Alexander II, 1818-1881, 25 Kopecks 1878, St. Petersburg Mint, H. 4 in ¼ turned 90 degree[s] counterclockwise. Very rare. About extremely fine. Another var[iety] not in GM." This type was struck 1861-85 at St. Petersburg. Most dates have small mintages but 1877 and 1878 are common. The weight was changed to 5 g, 0.900 fine in 1886 with no change in silver content. This specimen realized almost triple the catalog value for Uncirculated.
