This specimen was lot 854 in Sincona sale 19 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 8,500 (about US$10,652 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "3 Kopecks 1878, St. Petersburg Mint. Rare as a proof. Magnificent brilliant proof with full red mint lustre." This type was issued 1867-1914 in large quantities and is common.
Recorded mintage: 6,355,000 plus a few proofs.
Specification: 8 g, copper, 28 mm diameter per the SCWC; 9.83 g, 28.36 mm diameter per Numista, this specimen 9.87 g.
