Sincona sale 12, lot 773

This specimen was lot 773 in Sincona sale 12 (Zürich, October 2013), where it sold for 6,000 CHF (about US$7,760 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Alexander II, 1818-1881, Poltina 1857, St. Petersburg Mint. Very rare as a proof! Choice proof with minor contact marks and beautiful green patina." Altho struck in much smaller numbers than the contemporary ruble, this type struck 1832-58 has a lower catalog value. This specimen realized over eight times the SCWC value for a proof. An 1857/6 overdate is noted.

Recorded mintage: 450,000.

Specification: 10.36 g, 0.868 fine silver, .289 troy oz ASW, 28.5 mm diameter, this specimen 10.40 g.
