This specimen was lot 4509 in Goldberg sale 75 (Los Angeles, September 2013), where it sold for $1,150. The catalog description[1] noted, "Russia. Ruble, 1772-СПБ АШ. Catherine II, The Great. Well struck with considerable mint luster. NGC graded AU-50." The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. This type, issued 1763-82, is fairly common as is this date. Catherine the Great began life as an obscure German princess but became czarina after the murder of her husband. The rubles of Peter II were about 28 grams but this type seems to be only 24 grams.

Recorded mintage: 1,050,000 (all three assayers).

Specification: 24 g, 0.750 fine silver, .578 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Sev-2069; KM C-67a.2, Dav-1684.
