The first specimen was lot 25559 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $6,462.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Catherine II gold 10 Roubles 1772-СПБ, Bust right / A cross of four crowned, cruciform shields with the date in the angles, VF30 Details, Cleaned ANACS. Normal wear for the grade, and we doubt that most would consider this example as a 'cleaned' coin." The second specimen was lot 33177 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $4,560. The catalog description[2] noted, "Russia. Catherine II gold 10 Roubles 1772-CПБ AU Details (Mount Removed) NGC, St. Petersburg mint. Amongst the more difficult dates in this already challenging 10 Roubles series, and one which comes almost universally in cleaned, circulated, or mounted states, with this being only the third example we have handled. As such, the present piece is comparatively fine for the issue, with just a single straight-graded AU50 standing as the finest currently certified by NGC." This type was struck 1766-76 and superseded the ten rubles of the Czarina Elizabeth which were 16.59 grams. All dates are rare.
Recorded mintage: 51,000.
Specification: 13.08 g, 0.917 fine gold, .385 troy oz AGW.
