Stack's Bowers 2026 NYINC sale, lot 41243
SB126-41243r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41243 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $38,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Resounding 10 Rubles of Catherine "the Great" with an Overdate, RUSSIA. 10 Rubles, 1771/69-CNB. St. Petersburg Mint. Catherine II "the Great". PCGS MS-61. Tremendously struck across both sides, this incredibly attractive and alluring example displays a rather clear overdate, with the "6" evident below the second "7." The only such example of the type in the PCGS census, it delights with golden-yellow hues and surfaces that are seemingly as pristine as the day upon which it departed the mint. A VERY RARE and exceedingly important opportunity for the advanced collector of Russian coinage." This type was struck 1766-76 and superseded the ten rubles of the Czarina Elizabeth which were 16.59 grams. The overdate is not mentioned in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: 31,000.

Specification: 13.08 g, 0.917 fine gold, obliquely reeded edge.

Catalog reference: Fr-129a; KM-C79a; cf. Bit-24 (for regular date).
