Russia 1749-SP poltina
The first specimen was lot 227 in Sincona sale 78 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$300 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA | Russian Empire and Federation | Elizabeth, 1741-1761, Poltina 1749, St. Petersburg Mint, SPB. 5 roubles according to Petrov. 4 roubles according to Ilyin. Fine-very fine. Scratches." The second specimen was lot 2060 in Goldberg's NY International sale 59 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[2] noted, "Poltina 1749 CПБ. Rare. Authenticated and graded by NGC AU 58 (# 6611824-005). Satiny light charcoal gray. Very choice, virtually -Uncirculated." This type was struck at St. Petersburg 1743-51 and Moscow 1742-49 in small numbers and it is expensive today.
