Künker sale 336, lot 6601

This specimen was lot 6601 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €95,000 (about US$124,317 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REGENSBURG, STADT, 10 Dukaten 1766, Nürnberg, mit Titel Josefs II. auf seine Huldigung. MON . REIP . - RATISPON . Stadtschlüssel in verzierter Rokokokartusche, darüber Adler mit Lorbeerkranz im Schnabel und Reichsapfel sowie Zepter in den Fängen//IOSEPHVS II . D . G . - ROM . IMP . SEMP . AVG . Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit Lorbeerkranz und umgelegtem Mantel, im Armabschnitt die Signatur ŒXLEIN. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Winzige Kratzer, vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Regensburg, ten ducats of 1766, Nuremberg mint, in the name of Joseph II, on his coronation. Obverse: baroque arms supported by a flying eagle with a laurel wreath in its beak; reverse: laureate, draped and armored bust right. Very rare, light scratches, extremely fine.)

Aus altem Münchner Besitz. Für die Kaiser-Huldigung am 28. April 1766 wurden "Jubel-Münzen" in Gold und Silber ausgegeben. Da der Regensburger Münzmeister Johann Christoph Busch verstorben war, gab man den Auftrag nach Nürnberg. Johann Leonhard Oexlein schnitt die Stempel ohne Wertangabe, da von ihnen sowohl mehrfache Dukaten als auch Feinsilbertaler geprägt wurden. Laut Münzakten sind 604 Taler hergestellt worden; die Anzahl der Goldmünzen ist nicht angegeben, dürfte aber sehr gering gewesen sein. (From an old Munich estate. "Jubilee coins" in gold and silver were issued for the Emperor's homage on April 28, 1766. Since the Regensburg coin master Johann Christoph Busch had died, the contract was placed in Nuremberg. Johann Leonhard Oexlein cut the dies without specifying the value, since they were used to strike both multiple ducats and thalers. According to the records, 604 thalers were produced; the number of gold coins is not specified, but was likely very small.)"

The obverse features the bust of Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor and busybody son of Maria Theresia of Austria.
