Künker sale 405, lot 3278

The first specimen was lot 31013 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $4,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "Regensburg. Free City gold 1/2 Ducat ND (1765-1790) MS63 PCGS. Highly lustrous and choice, this charming city issue displays an enchanting golden-orange tone and exceptional surfaces, along with a razor-sharp strike and slight cameo nature. Tremendous eye-appeal is self-evident." The second specimen was lot 3278 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,624 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS JOSEF II., 1765-1790. Goldmünzen aus der Zeit des Kaisers Josef II. ½ Dukat o. J. (1765-1790), mit Titel Josefs II. Münzmeister Georg Christoph Busch. Stempelschneider Johann Nikolaus Körnlein. GOLD. Min. gewellt, fast vorzüglich. (city of Regensburg, undated half ducat, struck in the name of Joseph II. Slightly wavy, about extremely fine.)"

Regensburg retained the quaint habit of not dating her coinage, to the annoyance of modern collectors. This issue accompanied a single ducat (Fr-2564).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.75 g, 0.986 fine gold, the second specimen 1,72 g.

Catalog reference: KM 386, Beckenbauer 511; Fr-2566; Slg. Bach (Auktion Künker 238) 4869.
