Künker sale 405, lot 3284

This specimen was lot 3284 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$4,461 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS JOSEF II., 1765-1790. Ein Konventionstaler von den Stempeln des Zehndukatenstücks mit dem Titel Josefs II. Konv.-Taler o. J. (1765-1790), mit Titel Josefs II. Geprägt mit den Stempeln des Zehndukatenstücks. Münzmeister Johann Christoph Busch. Stempelschneider der Vorderseite Johann Leonhard Oexlein, der Rückseite Johann Nikolaus Körnlein. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Felder geglättet, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (city of Regensburg, undated convention thaler, struck in the name of Joseph II using ten ducat dies. Supremely rare, fields smoothed, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The SCWC doesn't show any undated thalers for Joseph II; in addition, this example's weight matches the pre-1753 reichsthaler standard rather than the convention thaler standard (28.06 g, 0.833 fine).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29,18 g.

Catalog reference: KM unlisted, Beckenbauer 221 Anm. (incorrectly listing Georg Christoph Busch as mintmaster); Dav-A2629; Slg. Bach (Auktion Künker 238) 4878.
