Regensburg (1784-90)-GCB 22 ducats Fr-2549a
This specimen was lot 1675 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 260,000 CHF (about US$360,360 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Regensburg, Stadt. 22 Dukaten o. J. (nach 1784), Regensburg. Mit dem Titel von Joseph II. Stempelschneider Johann Nikolaus Körnlein. Münzmeister Georg Christoph Busch. NON DORMIT CVSTOS Stadtansicht von Nordosten mit der Steinernen Brücke und Flussufer, im Mittelpunkt der Dom (die Türen auf der falschen Seite), am Flussufer angelegte Schiffe und mehrere Bäume, im Fluss ein Schiff mit zwei Männer, sowie ein nach links gerichteter Pfeil, auf dem Ufer die Stempelschneidersignatur K, im Abschnitt RATISBONA. / G.C.B. Rv. IOSEPHVS II.D.G. - ROM.IMP.SEMP.AVG. Gekrönter Doppeladler mit den Reichsinsignien in den Fängen und gekröntes Wappen Habsburg/Lothringen auf der Brust. Von grösster Seltenheit. Obverse: city view from the northeast with the Stone Bridge and river bank, in the center the cathedral (the doors on the wrong side), ships moored on the river bank and several trees, in the river a ship with two men, as well as an arrow pointing to the left, on the bank the die cutter's initial K, in the cartouche RATISBONA; reverse: crowned double headed eagle with the crowned arms of Austria and Lorraine on its breast and a sword and orb in its claws. On the occasion of the coronation of Joseph II as emperor, the city struck a long series of gold coins ranging from 22 ducats down to one quarter ducat (Fr-2549a to -2567). All of the imperial free cities were wiped away in the Napoleonic period except for Hamburg, Lubeck and Bremen.
