Portugal 1886 50 reis

from the Mountain Groan Collection

This type, the size of a half dime, was struck in Lisbon 1874-80, 1886-89. King Luis ruled 1861-89. There was an issue of silver fifty réis during the reign of Carlos (KM 536, 1893) after which the coin was converted to copper-nickel.

Recorded mintage: 60,000 (a common date).

Specification: 1.25 g, 0.917 fine silver, 15.5 mm diameter.
