This specimen was lot 58166 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 50 Reis, 1887. Paris Mint. Luis I. NGC MS-63." This specimen was offered again as lot 47520 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $360. This type, the size of a half dime, was struck in Lisbon 1874-80, 1886-89. The type is common but this is a low mintage date. King Luis ruled 1861-89. There was an issue of silver fifty réis during the reign of Carlos (KM 536, 1893) after which the coin was converted to copper-nickel.
