Sincona sale 51, lot 2888

This specimen was lot 2888 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$664 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Luis I. 1861-1889. 5000 Reis 1887, Lissabon. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of Portugal, Louis I, 1861-89, five thousand réis of 1887, Lisbon mint. Extremely fine.)"

This type was struck in Lisbon 1867-83, 1886-88 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 10,000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.

Recorded mintage: 44,000.

Specification: 8.87 g, 0.917 fine gold, .261 troy oz AGW, this specimen 8.90 g.
