Portugal 1886 10000 reis
This specimen was lot 3293 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 10,000 Reis (Coroa), 1886. PCGS MS-64 Secure Holder. Lustrous and attractive with flashing fields showing a light covering of gauzy toning. Trivial bag marks which are invisible to the naked eye. Tied with one other piece as the finest certified example and justifiably so with it's massive eye appeal." This type was struck in Lisbon 1878-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 5000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.
Recorded mintage: 1,800, a better date.
