This specimen was lot 25291 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "Luiz I gold 10000 Reis 1885, MS62 NGC, lustrous surfaces with some noticeable contact marks in the obverse fields." This type was struck in Lisbon 1878-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 5000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.
Recorded mintage: 21,000.
Specification: 17.73 g, 0.917 fine gold, .522 troy oz AGW.
