This specimen was lot 12469 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 5,000 Reis (1/2 Coroa), 1886. NGC MS-65. A superb example of this low mintage (27,000) date." This type was struck in Lisbon 1867-83, 1886-88 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 10000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.

Recorded mintage: 27,200.

Specification: 8.87 g, 0.917 fine gold, .261 troy oz AGW.
